Marek Fuchs is a professor, journalist and volunteer firefighter. Fuchs is The Ellen Kingsley Hirschfeld Chair in Writing at Sarah Lawrence College, where he also serves as the Executive Director of The Journalism and Justice Institute. Better than that, though, he is a state championship winning youth basketball coach.
Fuchs worked on Wall Street as a stockbroker at Shearson Lehman Brothers before becoming The New York Times’s “County Lines” columnist for six years. He also covered The New York Knicks and other professional and collegiate sports and contributed frequently to many of the Times’s other sections, including: National, Metro, Escapes, Real Estate, Arts & Leisure, Travel, Money & Business, Circuits and the Op-Ed Page. Fuchs, who has also written columns for The Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch and Yahoo!, was named the nation’s best critic of business journalism by the TalkingBiz website at The University of North Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He was formerly editor-in-chief of Fertilemind, a financial website twice named “Best of the Web” by Forbes.
Kirkus Reviews called “A Cold-Blooded Business,” Fuchs’s book about a Kansas murder, “riveting.” ABC News said “Local Heroes,” Fuchs’s book about volunteer firefighters across America, was “elegant … graceful … lively and wonderful.” Fuchs speaks regularly on business and journalism issues at venues ranging from annual meetings of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers to PBS to National Public Radio. At Sarah Lawrence, he also serves as faculty advisor to the student newspaper and pre-professional journalism group.
Fuchs has three children and his fingers are forever crossed that his team of grade school basketball champs wins one more championship before he hangs up his whistle.
